Defense Secretary Lloyd Austinâs salary would be cut to $1 under Marjorie Taylor Greene proposal
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s salary of $221,000 would be cut to just $1 under an amendment to a defense spending bill proposed by Georgia U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, according to news reports.
“The provision states clearly: “None of the funds made available by this Act may be used to pay Defense Secretary Lloyd James Austin III a salary that exceeds $1,” The Hill reported.
“Under his failed leadership, our military is being destroyed and he doesn’t deserve to serve any longer,” Greene said on X, the social media platform once known as Twitter.
“This is the first time in the 118th Congress the Holman rule has been used to hold a Biden official accountable. It’s time for more,” Greene said.
“Several unidentified lawmakers voted “aye,” allowing the amendment to be placed in a defense appropriation bill. But the amendment is likely to go nowhere as the spending bill was already doomed to fail in the Senate,” Business Insider reported.
“A spokesperson for the Pentagon said it would be inappropriate for the Defense Department to comment on pending legislation,” Stars and Stripes reported.
Austin, a West Point graduate who rose to the Army’s elite ranks, is a Mobile, Alabama native who was appointed in 2021.
